Darpa:U.S. Geek Shortage Is National Security Risk:soliciting proposals for initiatives that would attract teens to careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)| Wired.com
In response to yesterday's Chicago Tribune article,
Illinois teen employment at new low: Decline puts jobless youths at risk of falling further behind economically for years to come, says new report
I am calling my friend, Professor Bill Massey, Princeton who founded the international Conference for African-American Researchers in the Mathematical Science (CAARMS) when he gets back from his travels to propose they work with my shop, BAC Partners and Tutor Mentor Connections (TMC) to put together a proposal to DARPA to increase minority students interest in science, technology, engineering and mathmatics. "The agency doesn’t offer specifics on what kinds of activities might boost computing’s appeal to teens, but they want programs to include career days, mentoring, lab tours and counseling." CAARMS has research and teaching expertise, relationships in the corporate, university and government communities; TMC has youth education policy expertise and access to 200 afterschool tutoring and mentoring programs, in Chicago area, especially in disadvantaged communities; and I am an experienced grants writer and advocate. If you have some ideas, expertise or others you think might be interested in working on this please have them contact me. Thanks
