Report: Only 4 percent of college students are black males in U.S.

Next week, Thomas R. Proctor High School senior Julius Blackshear will visit several colleges during winter break. By the end of the week, he will have a better idea of which college he might attend in the fall.

Blackshear's winter-break activity represents that of many high school seniors, but he's somewhat of an anomaly among black males, according to a study by the Washington, D.C.-based Council of the Great City Schools that found only 4 percent of college students are black males.

Because this is black history month, it is a good time to reflect on what is happening to public education. There's really not much use in recalling how bad things used to be or debating why African Americans still celebrate black history month.

But it is critical to figure out how to fix public schools. To borrow a slogan from Phillip Jackson, the founder of the Black Star Project: "Educate of Die."

Latinos Launch Bold Education Initiative! Where Is the Bold, Black Education Initiative?

Chicago-The United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) today announced the launch of its 2012 Student Leadership Series, the boldest initiative in the Latino community that will challenge over 40,000 students in 40 cities in 30 states to stay in school, improve their academic performance, graduate, and pursue post-secondary education or training. Walmart, furthering their commitment to providing educational opportunities to diverse communities across the country, serves as the Title Sponsor of the Student Leadership Series.

Over 3,000 high school students, teachers and counselors, as well as recruiters representing vocational and technical schools, community colleges, and 4-year academic institutions are expected to attend the launch, which will feature former NASA astronaut Dr. Jose Hernandez.

This report provides a summary of the accomplishments of the Open Society Campaign for Black Male Achievement since its inception in 2008. It contains the rationale for developing the campaign, a breakdown of its grantmaking goals and strategies, various collaborations that have been created, and descriptions of grantees in each key strategy area. Belafonte - "What's missing is that rage."

It was both a walk down memory lane and a call to action when singer, actor, civil rights activist and international humanitarian Harry Belafonte spoke at St. Sabina Church. Part of a Black History Month program that also brought Princeton Professor Cornel West to the South Side church on Sunday, Belafonte, espousing incendiary views on racism and capitalism for six decades, did not hold back during his presentation Friday night.
